Eureka Prize Finalist – Solar Research
Congratulations to Professor Anita Ho-Baillie for becoming a finalist in the Eureka Prize for Scientific Research. Professor Ho-Baillie’s research is focused on harnessing metal halide perovskites as an alternative to silicon in solar panels. The University of Sydney team is looking at ways to make the perovskite cells more durable and therefore more commercially viable. More information here.

Space Solar: New research in harnessing solar power from orbiting solar panels
Harnessing solar energy from space may sound like the stuff of science fiction but the reality is closer than you may think. Recently the Californian Institute of Technology has invested more than $100 million in developing systems to harness solar power from space. The first tests are anticipated to launch into orbit in 2022. But they are not the only ones; Chinese and Japanese teams also have plans to develop tech to harness space solar power. Why are they so keen on space as a new frontier for solar? The lack of weather variabilities and 24/7 supply is the biggest factor. Royal Solar Innovation: The Earthshot Prize
Have you heard of Prince William’s Earthshot Prize? The Earthshot Prize is a decade long innovation to inspire researchers throughout the world to take action to repair the earth. There is a section of the Earthshot Prize called “Clean our Air” and 14-year-old finalist Vinisha Umashankar has taken a common environmental problem in India and developed an innovative solution.
