Microsoft’s pledge for climate and social justice
Well done to Microsoft for being leaders in the green tech field. Their new solar innovation does not only include the purchase of solar-generated electricity for their whole organisation; it also includes the offset of historic carbon emissions. A great example of big business making a real difference. More information here.
South Australia becomes a world leader in solar
South Australia is on target for a massive solar milestone in the next few months – being the first gigawatt-scale grid in the world to meet all of it’s demand from solar panels. SA Power have created a video to celebrate this milestone and to congratulate all of SA on being part of the achievement. From Paul Roberts, head of corporate affairs at SA Power Networks, “South Australians may not know, so we’re sharing and celebrating the fact that we are leading the world in powering our lives on renewable energy.” Check out the Video on YouTube here. Predictive AI to be used in solar
One of the biggest stumbling blocks for predicting solar power generation is weather variability. But how about using AI to predict not just the weather? What about cloud patterns and other factors that influence solar production. This innovation is, of course, homegrown but is starting to gather attention in the UK where weather predictability is a constant source of frustration for solar providers. This project even has the backing of Google.org and is sure to make a big impact in the future. More information here.
The end of the coal era in NSW gets closer
Energy Australia has pledged a move away from coal by 2040. The Mount Piper Power Station in NSW was planned to close in 2042 but is now expected to complete operations by 2040. This plant is the newest coal-fired power plant and currently supplies 15% of the electricity used in NSW. Whilst two years may not seem like a huge change, it is a change that shows continued confidence in the rollout of solar and other renewables throughout NSW. This new date still allows plenty of time for the workers and community to plan for the transition.
